Insecticides is a general name for chemicals used to rid crops of insects. The ending '-icide' carries the idea of elimination. The beginning of the word tells what's to be eliminated. It's the same idea behind the word 'pesticides'.

Insecticides are chemicals which are used to prevent insect infestations of crops.

Specifically, the English term comes from the ancient Latin language. It joins the neuter past participle insectum("cut up," in reference to the animal's joined, segmented body parts) and the ending -cīda ("one who kills"). Depending upon potency, insecticides will work to contain or eliminate insect pests.

A chemical that kills insects is called a pesticide. Pesticides like Roundup also kill beneficial insects such as honeybees and Monarch Butterflies. Only use a pesticide if you really have to and even then, use as little as possible.
