Mediterranean comes from the Latin medius (middle) and terra (land), meaning middle of the land.In addition to being the center of European civilization, and between the continents of Europe and Africa, Romans and others knew that the sea was enclosed, or nearly so, by land masses.
The term is often used to refer to Mesopotamia, in what is now Iraq. However, contemporaneous civilizations existed in Egypt and in the Levant (Mediterranean Middle East), and in the Indus Valley of southern Asia.
The name Mediterranean is derived from the Latin mediterraneus, meaning "inland" or "in the middle of the earth" (from medius, "middle" and terra, "earth"). It covers an approximate area of 2.5 million km but its connection to the Atlantic (the Strait of Gibraltar) is only 14 km (9 mi) wide. In Oceanography, it is sometimes called the Eurafrican Mediterranean Sea or theEuropean Mediterranean Sea to distinguish it from mediterranean seas elsewhere. The Mediterranean diet is a modern nutritional recommendation inspired by the traditional dietary patterns of poor coastal regions of Southern Italy, Crete, and coastal Greece in the 1960s.
Depends on time period. During the earliest history of Western Civilization (ancient Rome) it was centered around the Western Mediterranean. During the middle history of Western Civilization (medieval Latin Christendom) it was centered around Europe. During the modern history of Western Civilization (post 1492) it was and still is centered on the Atlantic Ocean due to European colonization of the Americas. Today, the Western world is also known as the "Euro-Atlantic world" because of that.
