by looking at the engine. if it says duratec it has 24 if not duratec it has 12
If you are swapping the Vulcan OHV engine, it will work without issue. If you are attempting to swap the Duratec DOHC engine, it will bolt in, but the computer will not be capable of running the engine.
The front one
yes, it's in the valve cover
On the driver side of the engine, it is the only thing run by a short belt under the plastic cover which has the 24 valve duratec v6 logo on it.
The front one. And it's "TAURUS", not "tauras."
In a 2002 Ford Taurus : Both 3.0 liter V6 engines , the " Vulcan " and the " Duratec " use a timing CHAIN
On a 1999 Ford Taurus , the " Vulcan " and " Duratec " 3.0 liter V6 engines are both fuel injected so there is no carburetor for the engines
Look under the hood. If there is a label somewhere on the engine that says DURATEC V6, it's a Duratec. If it just says V6 3.0L, it's the Vulcan.
First thing to do is have the computer scanned. If it is misfiring it will have set a code. Auto Zone will scan it for free except in Calif. Use that information to try and determine the cause. It can be plugs, plug wires, O2 sensor, camshaft position sensor, among some other things.
Either the 3.0 liter VULCAN engine or the 3.0 liter DURATEC engine
200 horsepower for the 3.0 L - DOHC - V6 ( Duratec ) engine
