Well, honey, the colony of New Netherland was taken over by the British without a single shot being fired, and they renamed it New York in honor of the Duke of York. It was all very polite and civilized, unlike some other messy takeovers in history.
Peter Stuyvesant was the governor of New Netherland who refused to surrender to England. The English took New Netherland without firing a shot. The Dutch West India Company established a fur-trading empire in the region.

Part of the firing mechaism prevents the hammer from falling again until the trigger is released to reset it. Without it, you would have the possibility of firing more than one shot per pull of the trigger.
