The Vatican City, Kosovo, and Taiwan are the only independent states that are not currently members. http://geography.about.com/cs/countries/a/numbercountries.htm
There are four countries that are not members. Vatican City is not a member for ecclesiastical reasons and hasfull observer status. Kosovo has recognition from 69 of the 192 members of the UN, but itis believed that Russia would prevent its application to the UN. The Republic of China or Taiwan, …is excluded because China will notallow its acceptance by the UN Security Council where it holds apermanent veto right. Taiwan's 23 million citizens are not represented based on thequestion of its soverignty. Mainland China maintains that Taiwan isa part of China. South sudan as it has only recently declared independence andtherefore has not had the time to process an application to the UN Palestine is processing an application also. ( Full Answer )

Although Mexico is "poor" when being compared to the United States, Germany or any other industrialized nation, it is an "emerging market" with much better social and economic position than many of the so called "developing economies": 1. According to the CIA World Factbook, Mexico is the 11th econ…omy, with a gross domestic product of 1.6 trillion dollars. For comparison, Brazil is on the 9th position with 1.9 trillion, Russia is on the 6th position with 2.3 trillion, India is on the 4th position with 3.3 trillion and China is only second to the US with 7.9 trillion. 2. Mexico is also the 11th most populated country in the world, with 108 million people. Brazil has 192 million, Russia has 142 million, and India and China have 1,169 and 1,333 million people, respectively. 3. The average income of a Mexican is much higher than those of China, Brazil or India, being closely related to that of Russia. This qualifies Mexico as a "richer" nation when compared to those countries: Mexico: US$14,000 Brazil: US$10,100 Russia: US$15,800 India: US$2,800 China: US$6,000 4. Finally, the United Nations has created an index that can help you find which countries are "richer" than others in "human terms". This is called the "Human Development Index" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index) for which Mexico and the other emerging countries have the following values: Mexico: 0.842 Brazil: 0.807 Russia: 0.806 China: 0.762 India: 0.609 As you can see, Mexico is more on par with countries like Russia, Bulgaria, Poland, Argentina or Chile than to any poorer countries like Haiti, Cameroon or Somalia. There's quite a few different factors. At the time America gained independence, the Commonwealth hadn't been established, as Britain still retained all of her other colonial possessions. America could never have been a Commonwealth Dominion for a couple of reasons. First, America was established as …a Republic, which automatically made the country ineligible to be a Dominion. Second, after fighting a long war for independence, the American public wasn't going to accept the idea of having to accept the British monarch as head of state still. Going further, when the terms were negotiated with Britain, France - who had supported the US in the war for independence - had to be appeased, as well, and retaining ties to the British monarch would not have accomplished this. Relations between the US and Great Britain really weren't that hot in the following years. There was the War of 1812, there was British support of the Confederacy, there was the issue of the British impressing American sailors and forcing them to serve on British vessels, which went all the way up to the First World War. On top of it, after the Suez Canal Crisis, the positions of America and the Soviet Union as the world's superpowers was firmly established, and, at that point, there was no way a superpower was going to make itself part of an organisation which made it subordinate to a non-superpower. America has also seen a heavy influx of Irish immigrants, who certainly would've objected to membership in the Commonwealth. In all, there's a number of reasons, but the biggest factor is probably just when independence was achieved. ( Full Answer )

You may want to narrow down your criteria a good bit. The question is much too broad, as several countries were not members of NATO in the 1950s - some of those countries later became members of NATO, some were in the Warsaw Pact in the 1950s (some of those, too, would eventually become members of N…ATO), some countries were unaligned.
