This question is too vague, and needs more information. Many people over the centuries have been executed! Some countries still execute prisoners, depending on their crime. Other countries have abolished capital punishment, and imprison criminals for a long time instead of executing them.

Guillotine. It would cut off the heads of the victims, during the Reign of Terror. Certain people thought it was more humane than the old way of killing people [hangings, or beheadings with axe's]. It's believed that even after you were beheaded by the guillotine you could still live up to 30 seconds.

For most industrialized nations, capital punishment is a thing of the past. The United States is one of the few remaining NATO countries that have retained the death penalty. But there are still plenty third world and underdeveloped countries that punish their most wicked criminals and murderers by death.
Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Jamaica, Bahamas, Iran. Those are some of them.
