About A.D.850 some writers on music started using notation to explain what they were writing about. They lived in the Frankish kingdom, which covers what is now France, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland as well as northern Italy. About 900 the notation was written above the words in books of Catholic worship for the Mass, but this would help someone who already knew how to sing the music. Only about 1100 were staff lines added to make the notes singable even by someone who didn't know the music already.
In Western music, as part of the Roman Catholic mass, portions, as chants, were memorized and sung by monks. It's easier to remember tunes than just words. Remember few people could read. and the chants were very simple. Usually in a range of just 3 or 4 notes. Over time, the chants evolved and became more complex. However, in the East, Chinese musicians were writing music 5.000 years before that. So far as we know, music was memorized from one player to another just as folk tales and histories were memorized. Notation came later as the need for communicating notes from one place to another without a teacher.
