By 1846, about 5,000 Americans settled south of the Columbia River. The British had a lesser population but it did not want to give up its claims to the Columbia River. The disputed territory in Oregon Country became an issue in the election of 1844.

As the United States went west it claimed the land. Britain clamed the land also. the USA didnt buy it. the USA at the time claimed all the way up to British Columbia and at the time it looked like there was going to be another war between the USA and Britain. At this time america went to war with Mexico so America had to sign a treaty with Britain splitting the territory in half.
