The Canal The Panama Canal is a man-made canal in Panama which joins the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, it had an enormous impact on shipping between the two oceans, replacing the long and treacherous route via the Drake Passage and Cape Horn at the southernmost tip of South America. A ship sailing from New York to San Francisco via the canal travels 9,500 km (6,000 miles), well under half the 22,500 km (14,000 mi) route around Cape Horn. Although the concept of a canal near Panama dates back to the early 16th century, the first attempt to construct a canal began in 1880 under French leadership. After this attempt failed and saw 21,900 workers die, the project of building a canal was attempted and completed by the United States in the early 1900s, with the canal opening in 1914. The building of the 77 km (48 mi) canal was plagued by problems, including disease (particularly malaria and yellow fever) and landslides. By the time the canal was completed, a total of 27,500 workers are estimated to have died in the French and American efforts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama_Canal

The National Road was the first major highway in the United States. The initial stage of the project began in 1811; but it took a long period of time to build the road, and the project finally came to an end in 1839. In the midst of the building of the National Road, work began on the Erie Canal, starting in 1817. The canal was opened for traffic in October 1825. Thus, there were six years between when the National Road's construction began and the construction of the Erie Canal was started.

The French had the idea to build a canal across Panama first and they started the project; after about their sixth year working on the canal they ended up going bankrupt. that is when the US showed interest in buying the canal for the French, but Columbia, who at the time owned Panama, would not allow the purchase. An agreement was made with Panama to help them get their independence the US would be allowed to finish building the canal.
The Suez Canal first opened in 1869. The Panama Canal opened in 1914.

President Jimmy Carter, although the USA really created the nation of Panama to get the canal in the first place, so President Jimmy Carter was actually doing the right thing when he gave Panama the right to control something that was built on their land in the first place. Panama still allows the USA to have a say in how the canal is run.
First of all the US assisted Panama in their revolt against Colombia. It was only then that Panama agreed to let us build the canal. After that it was basically human labor and steam shovels which were a relatively new invention.

The United States spent $350 million dollars to build the Panama Canal. Panama invested $10 million of their own money on this project. The US also made a payment to Colombia, from which Panama broke away from.
The King of Spain Charles V was the first person to order the conduct of feasibility of building a canal in Panama. His interest was to find a way that would reduce the travelling time between Spain and Peru.
