An Iberian is an ancient name given to peoples of the Bronze Age who inhabited the Iberian Peninsula. The name "Iberian" is derived from the ancient name of the Ebro River, the Iberus, which was also used by the Ancient Greeks for the name of what today is called Spain (Iberia). The Iberian Peninsula is located in southwest Europe, consisting of present-day Portugal and Spain, which are separated from the remainder of the European continent by the Pyrenees Mountain Range to the northeast and separated from the African continent by the Strait of Gibraltar.
The two major countries are Spain and Portugal. The principality of Andorra, in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain, might also be included. The other country represented on the peninsula is the United Kingdom, with its small (2.5 square mile) territory of Gibraltar at the southern tip of Spain.
Spain is in the south east of Europe. Ihas land borders with France and Portugal, as well as Andorra and Gibraltar, and also coastlines on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Together with Portugal, their shared area is known as the Iberian Peninsula. See the map below.
