Before 18th or beginning India was called as "golden sparrow" because of it wealth, spices, precious metals and wisdom ( science, mathematics, geometry, astronomy and astrology). Then the name of India was Bharat (sanskrit) and Indus (Greek).

because in ancient period India is the most wealthiest country in the world.And most powerful ever.If we look at the shape of country India(including Pakistan) it looks some like a sparrow.I am not sure but the ancient books tell us that in the kingdom of Chandrragupt Maurya the houses tops are made of gold.Thats why India is called golden sparrow by Europeans.
White crowned sparrow is the closet relative, but others are the golden crowned sparrow and the Harris' sparrow.
