Although Saladin and King Richard 1 were opponents in the 3rd Crusades, they respected each other and had an interesting, unusual friendship. For example, Saladin gave King Richard I fruits and snow to cool his drinks when he was sick. Saladin also gave King Richard I two fresh horses when his horse fell during battle. King Richard 1 even suggested his sister to marry Saladin's brother.
The Christian commander and king Richard the Lionheart, or Richard the 1st, was the one that ended the Crusade of Kings, also known as the 3rd Crusade.
The first crusade was led by princes from France, though it initially included Frederick Barbarossa, King of Prussia, his army returned home following his death en route to Palestine. The french nobles successfully conquered the Levant and established the Kingdom of Jerusalem composed of four principalities. The second crusade was intended to defend the now established Kingdom of Jerusalem from the Muslim army of Saladin, a reaction to the Christian invasion and ensuing abuses. Neither Saladin, nor the Christian defenders of Jerusalem were 'Kings' of any Kingdom, as the leper-king who had ruled the Christian kingdom of Jerusalem had recently died. The Third Crusade, however, was fought between Saladin, now sultan (king) of Egypt and Syria on the one hand, and Richard I 'the Lionheart' of England.

Richard the Lionheart was the leader of the Catholic army during the crusade of kings. He is named "The Lionheart" because he was the only king to complete his crusade during the Crusade of kings (neither the king of France, or the king of Germany finished). Saladin was his opposition.

King Richard knew they were very alike. He respected that Saladin was an honorable man, doing what he can to fight for his religion. This was returned by Saladin, who actually gave fresh water and fruit to Richard when he fell ill during the third crusade. Saladin was portrayed as a great and honorable man in many European illuminated manuscripts, and the population of Europe respected him. Richard the Lionheart was respected by the Muslim population. It makes you wonder, why is there so much hate between us today?
The Third Crusade was not started by Saladin the Ayyubid, but rather by King Henry II of England and King Philip II of France in 1189.
