Europe has yet to be united with a common currency. The Euro is the official currency of the European Union, which all members are eventually required to adopt upon admittance; however, currently only seventeen out of twenty-seven members use the Euro, and two members (Denmark and the United Kingdom) have opt-outs on the situation, meaning they are not required to adopt the Euro. Croatia will be the newest member of the European Union in July of 2013 and has expressed that they will adopt the Euro in the near future. Yet, three micronations (Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City) have adopted the Euro as their official currency with the consent of the European Union, despite not being members themselves. In addition, Andorra, Montenegro, Kosovo, and Zimbabwe (an African nation) are unofficial users of the Euro.

So in total, the Euro is used by twenty-three out of fifty-one European nations (45%). However, once the remaining members of the European Union (and one future member) adopt the Euro (many of which within the next few years), this will total to thirty-two out of fifty-one European nations (63%). Furthermore, the European Union will most likely engulf the entire continent of Europe in the future, not likely by force as all European countries (with the exception of Switzerland) has expressed their desires to join the European Union. Once this is accomplished, the European Union will most likely fuse into one nation, due to it already being a supranational organization, and we will see either the entire continent of Europe, depending on the situation with Switzerland, under a single European government and currency: the Euro.

The European Common Market doesn't exist anymore. Over the years it's changed and growing, first it became the European Community, then changed to its present form as the European Union.

Most of the European Union (EU) uses the Euro, but some members, eg the UK, have kept their traditional currencies.
