The first denomination was simply "Christian". They were to believe as one and to have the same mind and heart that Jesus had. A common term is "First Century Christians" which includes Jesus's apostles and other followers that, by the power of holy spirit, started forming Christian congregations throughout the lands controlled by the Roman Empire. The Apostle Paul took a missionary trip to Rome where the Christian religion gained many converts. At first, the Roman Empire persecuted and put many Christians to death. Later on, in the fourth century, the Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity but, also reformed it to fit better with the people of his empire which were largely of the Pagan religion. It was at this time that the Roman Catholic Church began in it's infancy. Because of this reformation, a lot of different sects evolved over the centuries and still do to this day. Many efforts have been taken by Christians to try and get back to the original form of Christianity that the first century Christians practiced.
