It depends on the wine that you are serving. Dessert wines are a no-brainer. White dessert wines (or stickies, as they are becoming frequently known) are entirely dependent on the varietel, ie chardonnay stickies, think creme brulee or souffles, viognier stickies, think pear crumble, etc. red dessert wines (port, port-style wines) go through an immense chemical explosion in your mouth when matched with blue-vein cheese or Dark Chocolate desserts. if you are just serving normal wines, try and go for something oaky (like a chardonnay or a semillon) as they are the easiest to compliment with something creamy. otherwise you can't go wrong with chocolate - red wine
If you ask this question it means you feel insecure with your hosts and you may not know them very well. Try and relax and think that you are not going to be judged by the quality of what you can give. Its just a small thing, but you yourself are the real gift. What would represent you ? The first thing to do is ask your hosts what they would like or would find helpful in terms of contribution. If you do not feel free to do this give anything you think appropriate, particularly its good to take things you have made rather that just bought.
well you dont want something to sweet or two sour no red wine as there not many people who like it i would go for hardys
It usually is because if you were eating a sweet dessert and went to drink non-dessert wine, the wine could taste sour or bitter compared to the dessert you are eating. So, usually dessert wines are sweeter.
there can be up to 150kcals in dessert wine. (3oz glass)
Typically white wine is served chilled and red wine is served at room temperature. If the dessert wine is a white then I'd suggest serving it chilled. A Marsalla wine is a red wine that is also quite sweet and is usually served chilled.
Dessert wine do not need to be aged, but can be. Make sure if it is a white dessert wine, it is chilled.
muscato
When you notice that the glass is nearly empty, ask the guest if they would like more. If it is the same wine, you can use the same glass, but if it is a different wine you should use a new (clean) glass.

Port.
Generally 3-oz. Dessert wines are much sweeter and more expensive then regular reds or whites so the serving size is a bit smaller then the average size of a more "common" wine which would be 5 oz.
Sangre De Cristo is my favorite Mexican wine - But I would suggest a sweet white wine if you can't find it
