Also remember to move the metal plate that is resting against the star wheel,with one hand pull the plate away and with the other hand move the wheel until the shoes are as close as u can get to move than try to put on the drums. ! Assuming the 97 is the same as my 96, jack the rear wheels off the ground and remove wheels. The brake rotor has a rubber plug in it which needs to line up with a STAR adjuster which is located behind rotor and near the bottom. Once you have the STAR wheel adjuster in sight you simply pry the star UP to increase brake, and DOWN to decrease brake. If there is an easier way, i sure would like to know.

Turn the star wheel adjusting screw at the bottom of the brake shoe assembly to allow the shoes to "retract" enough to put the drum back on. The star wheel is also the automatic (self) adjuster for the self adjusting brake shoes and is activated when the vehicle is put into reverse, driven...then stopped. Put some anti-seize graphite lube on the star wheel's threaded part to be assured it will work after complete assembly.

Lay down under the back of the truck and face one of the tires. You will see an oval rubber plug above the axel in the middle of the back plate of the brake. Pull out this plug and using a flat head screwdriver you will need to locate the star wheel that is inside this slit. All you have to do if rotate the star wheel to the outside of the truck. The easiest way to do this is to point the screwdriver down towards the ground, enter the slit in the back plate, locate the star wheel and then pull down on the screwdriver handle which will cause the flat head to rotate the star wheel to the outside of the truck. Repeat for the other side, again rotating the star wheel to the outside of the truck.
