As for doing an engine swap, you can swap in a number of different engines, if you have the time, money, resources, and know-how. A GM small block could be swapped in, or you could swap in a 3.9 Cummins 4BT or 3.9 Isuzu diesel (for the latter, adapters are more readily available to mate it with the 4L60E transmission in your Astro).
