Through out the history of the world women have always been considered the "weaker sex" and ruled by emotions rather than common sense. They were seen as the reason for man being thrown out of the garden of Eden and the creator of sin. Art has always shown women as either angles or sinners, and there was no middle for how women have been portrayed in history.
