The accession to the throne of England by the Scottish king James VI (James I of England). James was fascinated by witchcraft and Scottish history. The only problem is that this event did not take place in 1605, but rather in 1603. Some scholars think that there are allusions in the play to the Gunpowder Plot of November 5, 1605 and the subsequent trials.
