I would say the fall of Rome. When Rome fell all of government was gone, services and protection from others. The Romans had maintained roads, aqueducts, and had laws. Society literally fell apart and chaos took over. This is when the feudal system took over and strong men began to take over. The knights they employed were a little more than gangs. They would raid, rape, and burn villages.
Italy's several important cities that included a class of merchants & bankers that were becoming welthy and powerful. Also the artists were influenced by the ruined buidings and other reminders of classical Rome
Industrialization in Europe occurred first in Great Britain, then in other parts of Western Europe. Eastern Europe remained largely agricultural and little industrialized.

Africa was in the slave trade long before "Europe" even existed. Trading and selling to other African and Middle Eastern nations. Egypt had slaves 4,000 years ago, so did the Middle East. Vikings didn't, unless they kept a few captured enemies as water boys or milk maids, it wasn't to their advantage to have slaves.
