The common answer is "Amerigo Vespucci" and that is probably what your teacher will expect to hear. But there is much doubt among today's scholars if this answer is correct.
The exploration of Northern America was sponsored by a merchant from Bristol, England named Richard Ameryk, two years even before Vespucci first visited South America (he never went north). Bristol records of the time actually use the name "America" for the North American lands visited and discovered by the Ameryk-sponsored expedition.
The German printer who first used the name 'America" on a map was not altogether sure of the name, let alone of its origin: in the second edition of the map he had it changed back to 'Terra Incognita' ('Unknown Land').
Two things are certain: Vespucci, nor the people around him, ever called the lands 'America' themselves. Naming it after him using the feminine form of his first name is also not what you would expect. So with the very early actual use of "America" on British charts after Ameryk's expedition there is a solid case to be made that that might well be the actual origin of the name.
