Epilepsy is contagious

If you are meaning from a specific list of things that you had, that can only be answered if the list is given. In general terms there are lots of misconceptions about epilepsy. There are lots of stereotypes about epilepsy. Things like saying that flashing lights cause epilepsy. They can do, but that is for a very small amount of people. Only 3% to 5% of people who have epilepsy can have their seizures triggered by flashing lights. So for most people that have epilepsy flashing lights will not cause them to have seizures.

Another misconceptions is that people always fall down when they have a seizure or that they always start shaking. This happens for some seizures, but not for all. Some seizures are so mild that nobody other than the person that is having the seizure would even know that they are having one. It can be just a very sensation of feeling a little strange or a bit like day dreaming that nobody else would notice.

Many people think that epilepsy is a mental illness, when it is in fact a physical illness. So people with epilepsy have normal levels of intelligence. Many people with epilepsy have high levels of education and good jobs, just like people without epilepsy.

Many people think you can "catch" epilepsy like you can a cold. Epilepsy is not contagious. It is not an infection. You cannot catch it from another person and you cannot be vaccinated against it. Epilepsy has many causes.

Many people think epilepsy is fatal. It is very rare that someone will die from having a seizure. Most people with epilepsy will live long lives and when they do die, it is not from epilepsy. People could die if they were driving and had a seizure and crashed, or if they were climbing a ladder or a mountain and had a seizure and fell. In those cases, it would not have been the seizure that actually killed them, just the crash or fall.

So as you can see there are lots of things that people accept as being facts when it comes to epilepsy, but which are not completely true. For many of them there is truth in only a very small amount of cases and for most it is not a the case.

What fact about epilepsy is false?

No "fact" about Epilepsy is false. If it is a fact, then it is true. There are a lot of misconceptions about Epilepsy, which is really what your question is about. Some of these include that Epilepsy is contagious. It isn't. Some think that flashing lights cause seizures. That is only true for about 3% to 5% of people who have Epilepsy. For all others who have Epilepsy, flashing lights have no effect on them. Some people think Epilepsy is a mental illness, which it isn't. It is a physical illness. People think you can swallow your tongue when you have a seizure. It is impossible to swallow your tongue, so it cannot be done when someone has a seizure. Some people think you should put something in the mouth of someone having a seizure to stop them swallowing their tongue. As they can't swallow their tongue anyway, that serves no purpose and in fact can be dangerous if the person bites the object and could damage their mouth or teeth. Some people think Epilepsy affects intelligence. That is also not true. Some people even believe that people who have Epilepsy cannot get a job. That is also not true. There are a lot of other misconceptions about Epilepsy, but those are just a few.

If they wanted to, they could do so. That is their own choice. The fact that they have epilepsy won't necessarily affect that.

Do some people with epilepsy also have autism?

No. Someone with Down's syndrome could also happen to have epilepsy, but if they do it isn't always to do with the fact that they have Down's Syndrome. Some people with Down's Syndrome will have or develop Epilepsy, but there is no guarantee that because someone has Down's Syndrome that they will also have Epilepsy.

Can a person with grand mal seizures give birth to a socialpath?

Any woman can give birth to a sociopath. Epilepsy is not a mental illness, which seems to be the basis for your question. Epilepsy is a physical illness. As any woman can give birth to a sociopath then so could a woman with epilepsy. However there would be no connection with the fact that the woman has epilepsy as to what way her child would be.

Does epilepsy affect fertility?

It has been said that people with Epilepsy can be less fertile than someone that does not have Epilepsy. The difference, if any, is very minor. It can actually be a result of medications being taken, rather than Epilepsy itself. There is little affect on the ability of couples to have children where one or other or both have epilepsy. People may have fertility problems that have no connection to the fact they have epilepsy.
