Sounds like the thermal relay is defective.
The 1994 Volvo 850 crankshaft position sensor can be found on the back of the engine. You will need to remove the rear engine cover in order to access the crankshaft position sensor.
Check and change the relay
Best way that I found to over-ride it is to unlock all the doors and the trunk via the trunk lock. ... sounds odd but this works! J.C.
It depends on the engine size and if it has AC or not but, generally the cooling system holds aprox 12 qts. (3 gallons).
One is for ac which works when you have ac on, other is auto which works when the radiator heats up.
It is a two wire sensor, very near where the upper radiator hose attaches to the engine.
It's a 30amp fuse for the rad fan motor on a 1994 vw golf 1.8L engine. It's location is #19
On the drivers' side front of car it is in the main fuse box in the engine compartment.
