The 1864 Battle of Tupelo was a Union victory. The battle took place on July 14th to the 15th in Mississippi. Union General A. J. Smith handed Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forest his largest defeat.As an aside, Tupelo Mississippi is the birthplace of Elvis Presley.

Union General Andrew Jackson Smith graduated from West point in 1838. Among the 45 graduating cadets, Smith was ranked 36th. Smith saw most of his battle action in the Western Theater. He was a key general in the 1864 Battle of Nashville and defeated Confederate General Nathan Forrest at the Battle of Tupelo.
