By listening to Lincoln and leaving their slave maters, they left the south without a lot of their labor force and some even joined the Union Army and served with great distinction. Don't remember many specific facts, but do remember that there was a mostly, African American for lack of a less racist sounding term, company at the battle of New Orleans who did a lot of good work.

The Confederate Army would have been able to attack Washington DC from the north. It would have left much of the area undefended. The Confederate Army would have been able to re-supply from many of the area's farms and factories.

Many born-Northerners did join the Confederate cause. From the highest ranking General,Samuel Cooper(see"Generals in Gray"by Ezra Warner,page 62) born in New York,to the lowly private Wesley Culp who left his hometown of Gettysburg,PA to join a Virginia regiment. He returned to his hometown with the Confederate Army and gave his life fighting for the Confederacy.These are just two examples at opposite ends of the heirarchy with many more in-between. In addition to the first answer which was good, another Northerner, Josiah Gorgas, a West Point graduate ranked sixth in his class of 184, had Pennsylvania as his home state. The army stationed him in Alabama before the war broke out. He was first offered a rank in the Confederate army but rejected that hoping for a better deal from the Union. No deal came forth. As Gorgas was married to a Southern family in Alabama, he accepted a second offer from the South. The job of Chief of Ordinance which he performed well under difficult situations.
Gen. Joseph Eggleston Johnston had the overall command of the Confederate Army, while Gen. Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard was left the tactical direction of the battle
