Why could a Northerner fight for the Confederacy during the US Civil War?

Many born-Northerners did join the Confederate cause. From the highest ranking General,Samuel Cooper(see"Generals in Gray"by Ezra Warner, page 62) born in New York,to the lowly private Wesley Culp who left his hometown of Gettysburg,PA to join a Virginia regiment. He returned to his hometown with the Confederate Army and gave his life fighting for the Confederacy. These are just two examples at opposite ends of the heirarchy with many more in-between. In addition to the first answer which was good, another Northerner, Josiah Gorgas, a West Point graduate ranked sixth in his class of 184, had Pennsylvania as his home state. The army stationed him in Alabama before the war broke out. He was first offered a rank in the Confederate army but rejected that hoping for a better deal from the Union. No deal came forth. As Gorgas was married to a Southern family in Alabama, he accepted a second offer from the South. The job of Chief of Ordinance which he performed well under difficult situations.
