The Romans brought water from sources on mountains to the towns by building aqueducts: water conduits (Latin aqua= water + duct from ducere, to lead; passageway). Most of them were underground conduits. When a valley had to be crossed or a gradient was needed to keep the water flowing, the ducts were placed on bridgework.

What did the water system for the ancient Roman people?

The ancient Romans had an advanced water system for its time. The larger Roman cities had better water systems than small cities. I am most familiar with the water system in ancient Rome than in other places. Ancient Rome, at its peak had a very well designed and maintained water system. Fresh water came from aqueducts that brought spring water from faraway mountain springs to Rome. Rome had indoor plumbing, a very good sewerage system, and heated and non heated public and private baths. Water was also available from the Tiber River also. Fresh water is essential for healthy living and in summary, the water system of Rome helped Romans expand the city with a well kept water system.

What did a fresh water system do to help the people in Rome?

The access to fresh water and its proper disposal is essential to a growing civilization if only in terms of health. Ancient Rome however needed a fresh water supply other than what the Tiber River could provide. The intricate and high end ancient engineering required for building an aqueduct system that brought fresh spring water from far away mountains was ingenious. The city of Rome was enhanced with indoor plumbing, hot and cold water for public and private bath houses. The sewer system for such an ancient time was a wonder.
