Electrons are lighter than proton

Electrons are elementary particles, and just happen to be among the lightest of them all. Protons and neutrons are not elementary (they consist of quarks and gluons) and just happen to be heavierer

The Electron is by far the smallest of the three. Protons are the same size and mass of the Neutron, and they are more than 1,800 times the mass of the electron.

If you don't understand that, here's some form of a table of the masses of the 3 particles:

  • Electron: 1/1800 Neutron = 1/1800 Proton
  • Neutron: 1800 Electrons = 1 Proton
  • Proton: 1800 Electrons = 1 Neutron

An proton is much much heavier.

An electon is so much lighter than oftentimes chemists pretend that they have no mass.

Is the electron or the neutron or the proton lighter?

The electron, the neutron and the proton are the building blocks of the atom. And of the three, the electron is far and away the lightest. The neutron is slightly heavier than the proton, and either particle is over 1800 times more massive than our little electron.

Is down quark heavier than up quark because neutron is heavier than proton?

The two are related, yes, but technically it would be more accurate to say it the other way around: "Neutrons are heavier than protons because down quarks are heavier than up quarks" Neutrons are composed of an up quark and two down quarks (udd). Protons are composed of two up quarks and one down quark (uud), so the difference in mass between a proton and neutron is (roughly) the same as the difference in mass between the neutron's down quark and the proton's matching up quark. Because a down quark is heavier than an up quark, it is also possible for a down quark to decay into an up quark (releasing an electron in the process). This is how beta radiation occurs in atomic nuclei. One of the neutrons' down quarks decays into an up quark, changing that neutron into a proton, and releasing an electron (as radiation), so another way to look at it would be that a down quark is an up quark that has an electron trapped inside it (the mass of the electron, plus the energy required to "trap" it there, is what makes the down quark heavier).

Which subatomic particle is nearly equal to the masses of the other two subatomic particles added together?

You may be referring to neutrons, protons and electrons. The neutron is heavier than the proton, but the difference is more like two electrons than one.

Which has more mass-a proton or electron?

The proton has much more mass than the electron, by a factor of 1836 times, a ratio called "mu". Recent astronomical research suggests mu may have changed by 20 parts per million in the last 12 billion years, but I plan to wait at least a billion years for confirmation!

Does electron weigh more or less then proton and neutron?

Protons are made up of Subatomic Particles, in this case a Proton Atom is made up of two Up quarks, and one Down quark. The mass of an Up Quark is 2.4 MeV/c2 and the mass of a Down quark is 4.8 MeV/c2. Electrons are still in the Subatomic Particle Table, an Electron is a type of Lepton. An Electron's mass 0.511 MeV/c2 which is a lot less than a Proton, even less than a Up quark itself (the lightest quark). In most cases when talking about Atoms and their mass Electrons don't normally have an effect on their mass, only the Neutrons and Protons in the Atom. This should answer the Question.

Which has a greater mass an electron or a proton?

In kilograms, an electron's mass is ~9 x 10^(-31). A proton's mass is ~1.7 x 10^(-27). The mass of the proton is more than 1000 times of an electron.

How many times lighter is an electron than a proton?

The mass of an electron is approximately 1⁄1836 of a proton. Thus as hydrogen is made of one proton and one electron, hydrogen is 1837 times heavier than an electron.

Is it true or false that the proton and the electron have similar masses but opposite electrical charges?

False. A proton is about 2000 times heavier than an electron.

Do protons and Electrons have about the same mass?

No. Protons have about 1836 times the mass of an electron.

Does an electron have more maas than a proton or neutron?

How much heavier is a protron than an electron?

A proton has a mass over 1,800 times that of an electron (taken from this already-asked question: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_a_proton_or_electron_heavier)

What is the ratio of a proton to the mass of a neutron?

The mass of a proton and neutron are pretty close. So the ratio will be roughly 1 to 1 (or 1:1). The neutron is heavier and if memory serves it is exactly the mass of an electron heavier than a proton. Note it takes around 1820 electron to equal the mass of one proton.

Which has more weight electron or proton?

A proton is heavier than an electron. MASS(kg): Proton - 1.67 × 10-27kg Neutron - 1.67 × 10-27kg Electron - 9.11 × 10-31 kg *A neutron is about .1% heavier than a proton.

Why is most mass of the atom is in the nucleus?
