Hurricane Grace although at the time of "the perfect storm" it was no longer the original hurricane but a storm that had regenerated into a hurricane because of other factors. The regenerated storm was never named.

A perfect storm is an expression that describes an event where a rare combination of circumstances will aggravate a situation drastically. The term originated with how Bob Case, a meterologist, described the 1991 Nor'easter that struck New England. In that case three things happened that made for a worse-case scenario:

1. warm air from a low-pressure system coming from one direction

2. a flow of cool and dry air generated by a high-pressure from another direction, and

3. tropical moisture provided by Hurricane Grace

The storm of the title of the movie was nameless. I suppose it was Island ocean depression # so and so rather like Flight numbers. The characters involved were mainly fisherman. The short story- expanded into a book Fastnet Force Nine! involved the improbable but true case of a yacht race staged- inadervertently of course, in a full- force Hurricane.

Why was Hurricane Sandy considered a perfect storm?

Hurricane Sandy behaved in a similar manner to the Perfect Storm of 1991 in how it combined with an extratropical storm system and gained strength. Although Sandy was only a Category 1 hurricane when it made landfall on Atlantic City, NJ on Monday, October 29, 2012, other factors combined to make it a "perfect storm." Hurricane Sandy came from a merging of several things; a storm beginning in the warmed waters of the ocean, a funneling of cold air from the Arctic that pushed it onto the coast, and a high tide that coincided with the storm swell. Other factors that made Sandy a unique storm: its extremely low pressure (946 millibars on landfall), it's size (almost 1,000 miles wide), and it's path (making a sharp left turn into the Jersey shore, powered by high pressure from a system in Canada).
