Nowadays, when you purchase a typical computer it already includes a keyboard (input), a mouse (input), a monitor (output), and speakers (output), so you probably don't need to purchase those separately. (If you write a lot, but ONLY if you do ten-finger typing, I would strongly recommend an ergonomic (curved) keyboard, for instance one of the Microsoft Natural keyboards.) If you don't already have a printer (that's also output), you may want to purchase one as well. You may or may not need a scanner (input); one option is a combined printer/scanner/photocopier.
