It was when 180,000 American, British, and Canadian troops landed on 5 beaches in Normandy in Nazi occupied France. It was the largest invasion in history.
There were essentially 8 invasion points, the 5 beaches, and 3 areas inland where paratroopers and glider troops landed.
The American General Dwight 'Ike' Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander of the D-Day landings. The five invasion beaches were named Gold, Juno, Sword, Omaha and Utah. Omaha and Utah were allocated to American troops, Gold and Sword were allocated to British troops and Juno to the Canadians.

During the D-Day invasion, the Allied forces made a battle plan to storm the beaches of Normandy, France. Unfortunately for the Allied forces, the troops stationed in Normandy knew of the plans to storm the beaches. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers died on D-Day because the troops in Normandy were well-prepared for an invasion.
The Allies used aircraft to bomb the beaches and ships to bombard them before the invasion. Their troops used many different rifles, machine guns, and tanks after the invasion.
American troops were never sent to Russia. That would have been considered an invasion by Russia if that had happened.
6th June 1944
That was D-Day, the 6 th June, 1944
If Allied troops landing on the beaches were unable to achieve a lodgement at Normandy & likewise unable to link-up with the Allied Airborne troops further inland, then the Airborne troops would have been defeated and eventually killed & captured.
On the various beaches all troops on the Western Front were sent to the beaches where the invasion was thought to be. All the defenses include the Atlantic Wall, machine guns, mortars, artillery, and 58 divisions of troops. Obstacles include mines, pieces of metal, and deep holes and trenches.
They faced 'Rommels Asparagus' on the beaches and extremely heavy gunfire at Omaha.
