Green is better for digital keying and blue is better for film.

It is also handy to use blue if the subject is wearing a green shirt.

Do regular camcorders work with green screens?

yes for the most part all cameras work with a green screen, but it all depends on how even the light is across your subject and the green screen and what kind of chroma keyer you are using.

Can a blank wall be used like a green screen?

Sadly, no. Any software that has green screen capabilities cannot use a blank wall. Only green and blue screens will work. However, if your blank wall is completely green or blue and doesn't have many bumps on it, then it could be used like a green screen.

What is a tech term called blue picture?

This might refer to a technique called "blue screen", "chroma blue" or "chroma keying". Chroma key uses a pure colour background, normally blue or green, with a subject in front of the background. The subject will not have any of the background colour - A news presenter would not be allowed to wear a blue tie if he is in front of a blue screen for example. The signal is processed in the chroma keyer to change the blue or green signal to black, so the only visible image will be the subject itself. This is the "key" signal Next, the key signal is overlaid on a background. If the key signal is black, the background is visible, otherwise the key signal is visible. This is a simplified explanation - apologies to the broadcast staff who have a great deal of expertise in the science and art of setting up good chroma keys. This is often used in news broadcasts, with the presenters sitting in front of a blue screen. The rest of the news studio is a "virtual set", generated by computer graphics systems. The result is that the same studio can be used for lunchtime news, with its own distinctive set and then for evening news, with an entirely different set. Sometimes, it is possible to identify that the technique is being used, if there is a pale blue or green fringe around a presenter. The better the lighting and the more care the tech staff take, the less apparent it is. By the way, if the news presenter insisted on wearing his favourite blue tie with a blue background, the effeect would be to make the tie transparent, so you would see the background through the middle of the presenter. It makes for interesting and whacky effects on a music channel, but less impressive for the more serious broadcasters.

What materials can you use for green screen?

There are several ways to do it and all can be very effective. The commercial solutions use fabrics with a solid green color and they are way too expensive for most amateur movie makers. The most portable way is to buy fabric from any fabric store. However, before buying large quantities, get a small piece and do a test run with your chroma keyer. Unlike commercial green screen cloth, retail green cloth can sometimes have flecks of different colors woven into the fabric. They can disrupt the keying. Also make sure that the surface of the cloth is matt. Shiny surfaces can reflect light and wash out the color saturation. Again, a trial on a small piece will help you with this. For a fixed green screen, matt green paint on a flat wall will work just fine. Choose the purest green you can find - Get some sample pots first if you can. Whatever the surface you choose, make sure you light it evenly and with lamps of the same color temperature if you can.

How do you set up and or get a cheap green screen?

Green screens are used to isolate a subject from the background using a technique called chroma-keying. All parts of the image that are green are removed to allow a different background to be inserted later in the signal chain. Chroma-keying once needed a very precise color, either pure green or pure blue. Now that the keyers are software controlled, the need for such precise colors is much reduced. That gives the low budget film maker more options. The most expensive is to buy a complete set up from a broadcast dealer. We shall move on from that option... Idea number 1 Grass is one of the cheapest backgrounds going. It is green, self cleaning and self repairing and it's normally lit by the best white light ever seen - the sun. It may not be suitable for the shots you need but consider it. It has been used in many productions very successfully. Idea number 2 Large green sheets from department stores or fabric retailers. It needs to be a plain color and a rich green (or blue). Once again, if you can light it with sunlight and avoid shadows caused by wrinkles, it can work very well indeed. If it has to be inside, studio lights can be used to light it. Light it from the sides to avoid shadows of the subject and keep the subject as far away from the backdrop as you can. The closer the subject is to the green surface, the more green light will reflect onto the sides of the subject. Remember that the keyer will remove anything of that color. You don't want to see half of the presenter's face disappear along with the background. Lighting is vital. The background needs an even light level and consistent color temperature. The subject also needs to be lit with lights in front, above and to the side. A technique to avoid green lighting on the subject is to use pink lighting from the rear, facing the subject. They will help to remove the green cast from the backdrop and make for a far cleaner line around the subject. Idea number 3 Forget the green background and go for a white one instead. You will need studio lighting with pure green gels to illuminate the white screen. It has the same effect as using a green material with white lights but it is more important to make sure that the subject lighting doesn't wash out the color of the screen. Other than that, it works the same way as a green screen and some studio engineers and cameramen love the technique. Idea number 4 Paint one wall of the living room green. Cheap and easy to light. If you are married, then forget idea number 4. Idea number 5 First take a glass beaded projection screen, or a screen that is designed to reflect light back towards the light source. High reflectivity material on construction jackets and traffic signs will work as well but you will need a sheet of it large enough for the shot. Next, take 10 to 20 green LEDs, mount them on a ring that will fit around the lens of the camera and wire them to a power supply. There are some techniques for wiring them that you may need help with but it's not difficult. When the LEDs are lit, the reflective screen will bounce the green light straight back to the camera. It provides a very clean color and because there is so little green light being generated, it has almost no effect on the subject. There are some commercially available systems that use this technique but they are expensive for the amateur film maker. It may take some trial and error but the results can be very good indeed. In all cases, use the very best chroma-keyer that you can get your hands on. With good lighting and a good chroma-keyer, it should be possible to have glass, smoke and very fine blonde hair separated from the background without noticeable green spill. A final word: Studio staff have gained experience of chroma-key over many years. Don't expect to get great results straight away. It takes practice and it is an art as much as it is a science. Make time to experiment with as many subjects and lighting schemes as you can find. Try the challenging subjects like glass and smoke. If you can get a wisp of smoke clearly in the subject and not faded into the green background, then consider yourself an expert.

Where can you find a VERY cheap but usable chroma key software?

Chroma key software is becoming very common with most video editing packages. Most operate reasonably well but the question refers to usability. Free video editing and manipulation packages tend to work reasonably well but often suffer with poor user interfaces. As one pays more for better software, the control interface improves and high quality professional systems will always have elegant and effective interfaces. It is also worth noting that the more expensive systems tend to have a far greater range of controls for chroma keying with a great level of adjustment over chroma, luma and saturation levels for the filters among other things. For an experienced editor, the increased number of keyer controls is a definite advantage and gives him the tools he needs to set up a key quickly and efficiently even with less than optimal content and green screen backgrounds. For the casual amateur user, this extra level of control might work against a simple and quick set up. In these cases, the lower cost and simpler editors may be more effective at delivering a reasonable chroma key filter than the high end ones. So, to answer the question, take a look at trial several different products until you find one that is understandable, effective, simple to manipulate and within budget. It can be a challenge to find the right video or image editing software but it is worth pursuing until you have the right package. Spending time to find the system that works for you can save hours of work in the future.

What video effects does Sony Vegas have?

There are several effects and things you can do on Sony Vegas. I use Vegas Movie Studio 9.0, but have used other versions. You can make clips go backward, and crop pictures or video clips. You can also add music, videos, or pictures. Anyway... you may also use the effects that you can do on videos, music, and pictures. One of my favorite effects is the 'Sony Chroma Keyer'. With that you can make green screen for your picture. It is usually easy to do this if the background is one solid color, like green, black, or grey for instance. There are also other things like 'Sony Swirl'. Sony Swirl is where you can make a 'swirly' go around the picture or video. For the music you can make the voices of the singers or speakers of the video static or some sort of strange voice. You can also make the voices slow and low or high pitched and strange. These are just a few things you can do on Sony Vegas.
