Beyond the container lies the real information, a compressed video file that may be in several formats. For instance, a "trailer.mov" really might be an MPEG-4 video file, or an MPEG-2 video file, in a ".mov" container. The same applies to the ".avi" container. Containers are used because it gives flexibility to the author of a production. He or she can have a single video source and several audio sources (different languages) in the same file, lending to convenience.
