The answer to this question very much depends on the application and the specific classification that's being done. SVM methods are, in general, simpler and less computationally expensive. KNN can produce great results, but is prone to over-fitting because of the highly non-linear nature. Additionally, naive (and exact) KNN is very expensive. This can be leveraged, though, by using approximative algorithms.
In general, from my experience, SVM tends to be universally applicable whereas KNN is not suitable for some applications. Usually, SVM ends up in the top 3 or 5 classifiers for a given problem. SVM may not always be the best, but there's a good chance it's close to the best. But, it's generally easier to deal with multiple-class problems with KNN than SVM.
In summary, it depends on what 'better' means and what scenario you're working with, but if it's a 2-class problem I'd say SVM....

I have a question about my buisness that does not fit in to any categories listed. It is a SVM. Supervised Visitation Monitor. I monitor visits between children and the non custodial parent when a court order has been issued that a monitor is needed. Trouble is that there really is no license for this, I think there should be.But for now you just take some classes , fill out a simple form send in to social service dept or courts and your name is on the list. It does say on these lists that they are not reponsible for any one on that list. Which , to me what kind of sense does that make? How would I go about getting more clients? I have my name registered with one county court and the SVN to which I pay a fee every year. I have even sent out letters to lawyers introducing myself and put in cards. I got my first job this way. I am however having trouble getting on the other court lists in my area as they want to charge me a lot to take their classes and then be put on provider list. which should not even be legal as they are taking over that buisness in that area.
