Speaking traditionally, a billion chinchillas in England is bigger, by 3 orders of magnitude (assuming a consistent average size for all those critters). Recently, The UK and many other countries throughout the world are adopting the US meaning of 'one thousand millions' instead of their traditional 'one million millions'.

wrong again key-oh-wah-sabee......the way the pound sterling is falling against the US dollar, it won't matter where you keep your chinchillas....houses are worth less, cars are worth not much, and you can't eat a chinchilla and it still be worth anything.

Neither: there's a billion chinchillas in both places.

*GASP*

- Everyone forgot to take into account the size of the chinchillas. A better variation of this question is- 'What is heavier, a ton of feathers or a ton of fried ice cream?'

-

- Speaking in ratio to the size of the country, it would be the U.K. It would be larger in the U.K. anyway, because in the U.S. a billion is a thousand million but in the U.K. it is a million million. Actually, are there a billion chinchillas in either country?

- Well... seeing as America admittedly has a love of fast food, the billion in America would be much larger. By much larger, I mean MUCH LARGER. And think about it... a billion insanely obese chinchillas running around in America would definitely cause a few, um, problems.

A billion chinchillas is the same amount no matter where you are. No, a billion chinchillas in England would be bigger, because it's so cold in England that all the chinchillas would have to wear coats, hats, gloves and a scarf. This would bulk them up so much that they'd look more like 2 billion chinchillas!

They would be biggest in China, because the population is so big and all of the chinchillas would eat all of the people and they would grow to gigantic size. Moreover, they would be hungry an hour later.

-------------

American chinchillas are somewhat larger than English chinchillas. American chinchillas frequently exceed 1kg where as English vet's use a 500g average weight. This would make a large difference to mass calculations.

_________

Don't we also need to consider that the origin of the chinchillas and their current location are independent variables? The billion US chinchillas may very well be immigrants from the UK.

------

Has nobody realised that everything in the US is bigger than anywhere else so there is no argument.

--------------------

My opinion: They didn't say weight...or size of the mass...one billion is one billion, no matter where you go.

Does the number 1 billion have the same value in England as in the US?

Yes, one billion represents the same number in both countries. Now it does. But in the past, in the UK, 1 billion was 1,000,000,000,000. In the US 1 billion was 1,000,000,000. (The British called the American 1 billion one thousand million.) The UK has now adopted the American system, so it is the same in both countries.
