I think marching band is harder because it makes you winded. I'm not saying competitive dance doesn't. We are blowing a lot of air out while you guys get to breathe but kudos to you guys for all the nice dance moves. Marching band is like power walking several miles while constantly blowing air. Not to mention having to carry your instrument( I play sousaphone), be in step, be with the beat, memorize several pages of sheet music, have good posture, have good marching technique, and memorize up to 70-100 places to go on the field. Also we do yoga stretches, run laps, do pushups, cardio, breathing exercises(they can make you dizzy and make you unconscious), and we also have to have good horn angles(our instruments pointing at the right places. ex: Judges' box, 45 degrees to left or right. Also we have to march backwards and know where to go without looking and we have to do left/right slides. Slides are when we are facing whichever direction and keep moving another direction. ex: I am facing forward but I am moving left. I have to use my shoulder and pull it all the way back to keep my body straight forward while I am moving left. It hurts your shoulders and body. And are you serious? "little less hours of marching band" You obviously don't know about Band Camp... My band camp is for 2 weeks straight from 9am-6pm. And all first semester we have practice 3 days a week. Tues and Thurs 3pm-6pm and Wed night rehearsals from 5:30pm - 9pm. And there are no hour breaks either... only if we work really hard on perfecting our field show and are committed then the director may or may not give us a few minutes to get water. Usually it's just a swig of water and then we have to run back to our sets. Oh yah the director runs us through the sets of the field show so MANY TIMES. One more time=6+ more times. Directors and staff also punish us if we don't listen, march right, or fool around. They can make us do push ups or run laps. So please have more respect for marching band. I mean c'mon I'm in marching band but I don't go around saying competitive dance is easier. I think competitive dance is really hard just not as hard as marching band. Oh yah with all due respect, your routines are only a few minutes long. Marching band shows are up to 7-12 minutes long. I hope you view marching band differently and appreciate it. BTW both competitive dance and Marching band are both SPORTS and anyone who doesn't think they are should try them. See? I'm not in competitive dance but I respect it and think it's a sport. MARCHING BAND IS A SPORT!!! Bando for LIFE

Which horn is used in marching bands - Other the French Horn?

French horns are not used in marching bands. They are too unstable to march with effectively. Bands that march french horns are insane. The marching version of the french horn is called the "mellophone". There is also an instrument similar to the mellophone named the "marching french horn", but they are essentially the same instrument with a different mouthpiece. Additional marching brass instruments are trumpets, trombones, baritones, and tubas
