The 30-06 and the 8mm Mauser are just about ballistic twins. The 8mm (that is the everyday name for the 7.92x57) is loaded slightly lighter, since there were TWO 8mm Mausers- the I and the IS- and the older I has a slightly tighter bore. When shooting similar bullets, the 30-06 may have an advantage of 100-200 ft lbs energy more, but that is pretty trivial. Both are excellent long range cartridges, and capable of taking any game animal found in the Americas.

I'm not quite sure about the 3006, but I know that the longest recorded kill shot with a .308 was at about one and a half miles, possibly more.
