The best advice I can give is - don't buy one - untilyou've done a TON of research into which of the common species would be best for your circumstances. You need to find out the temperature ranges, humidity levels, food, lighting, nearest specialist vet etc BEFORE you get any reptile. Planning on picking the first one you see in a pet shop, putting it in an old fish-tank and expecting it to survive to old age will just result in severe disappointment (and likely one dead tortoise !) . There is NO substitute for research !
The cheapest torts you can probably find and get are fist of all Russian torts and Sulcatas. I have 2 salcatas and am thinking of getting a more expensive and challenging tort for Christmas. I am no expert but i have been looking for torts for the past few months and those are the cheapest. they are really easy to take care of and very outgoing. my favorite between the 2 would have to be the sulcata because it doesnt hibernate and gets big. thats just because i have a big yard. for those who have a small yard go with the sulcata because they need roaming land.
Whatever one you like. This question calls for an opinion.
