Big Ben -- St. Stephen's 316 foot clock-tower was completed by 1859, thereby replacing another that stood close to the site of the old palace clock-tower (1288-1707). The name, Big Ben, probably after Sir Benjamin Hall, First Commissioner of Works and a man of vast girth, applied originally only to the bell, which was cast at the Whitechapel Foundry. The Aryton light above the clock is lit while the Commons is sitting. Big Ben is commonly referred to as the clock housed in the tower at the eastern end of Britain's Houses of Parliament. The construction was started in 1078, by William the Conqueror (designed by Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester). It has been improved on by many leaders since. There have been fortifications on the site for around 2000 years but the buildings that can be seen today were started by William.
It was started by William Duke of Normandy in 1080 and has been added to and modified ever since.

William the Conqueror. He was the Norman King who won The Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Norman part is the keep or White Tower, which over the centuries has been used as a fort, a palace, a prison and a zoo. The other buildings are more recent.

Big Ben. Strictly speaking, Big Ben is the nickname of the 14 ton Great Bell, not the clock tower, although people now call the clock and tower Big Ben.
