It is very nearly impossible to say who "invented" petrol, assuming you mean "gasoline". "Petrol" was the name of a type of gasoline produced around 1870 by a company Carless, Capel & Leonard but it was used as a solvent and not a fuel for automobiles. Various types of refined petroleum products were first produced in the 1600s. The first use of the word "petrol" for gasoline was in the 1890s, but no one person is credited with its development. Actually gasoline was considered to be a waste product. Kerosene was much preferred.
