Oboe or violin. Oboe is definitely the hardest wind instrument and violin is definitely the hardest string instrument. I had a violin teacher from Russia and she said "In America the hardest instrument to play is the oboe. But in Russia the violin is the hardest instrument to play." I lean towards violin not just because I play it but if you think about it all you have to do with the oboe is learn the fingerings and the breath....(which does take a long time to get right). In violin you have to learn a lot of different fingerings and and they do not have keys you have to learn how to put your fingers on in the correct place. Violin also just has a lot of music written for it. (more than oboe). But it is a still a matter of opinion. I've played the Oboe for a year, and now the bassoon-both double reed instruments. I actually think bassoon is much harder, although they're both double reeds, bassoon is a much bigger instrument, and requries a lot of patience, and a lot of musical ability. I don't know about the violin though!

The answer to this question would be that every instrument is hard to play in there own way. I have played most of the instruments in the world so i know what i am talking about. The easiest i have played would have to be (proper ancestry i am talking about) the Cornet. But in the brass section once you know how to play one you know how to play them all. The hardest would have to be the violin (string section) i am learning to play it now and there is lots you have to think about. eg standing position bow hold arm position placing position That's just a few in many. All instruments are hard to learn at the start and all you do is practice to get better. But i would say that the hardest instrument to learn would be the oboe or bassoon (but this is at the start). Some people say the violin is the hardest instrument to learn but I disagree as the violin is relatively easy to play at the start compared to the bassoon or oboe however the violin gets very hard very fast and that makes it harder to play as you are always learning something new were as bassoon and oboe once you have mastered the fingerings its not to bad. But grand daddy of them all is the harp. to learn how to play this could take twice as long as any other instrument due to the numerous strings and positions. But wind instruments are generally harder to learn that string instruments as it will take longer for you to get your first sound out of it than a string instrument. But as I said at the start all you do is practice and the instrument will be easy to you. Well, I'd say that one of the hardest things that you need for almost every instrument is to be able to learn music. Personally, i think the clarinet is QUITE hard- wind instruments are the hardest. The piano is QUITE easy.
