It used to be July 21 (for hundreds of years of recorded temperatures), but now some scientists say it is July 19th. I would stay with July 21st until the "July 19th" crowd provides more data. And, for those of you in Rio Linda, it is "July 21st", not June 21st, the longest day of the year. (and, that would mean that July 21st is also the coldest day in the Southern Hemisphere.)

Why is July 31 the hottest day?

July 31 is not the hottest day of the year throughout the northern hemisphere. The day of the year with the highest average temperature for each location depends not only on the time of the year but also on nearby terrain and prevailing weather patterns.

Are the longest days always in the summer?

No, not necessarily. It is the longest day and it is when the solar declination is greatest, however that does not necessarily make it the hottest day. The hottest time of year is typically a month or two after the solstice after the land, and especially water, has heated enough to heat the air above it the most.

What is the sunniest month of the year?

In the Northern Hemisphere, June has the most sunlight in the majority of locations, as the longest day occurs on the summer solstice, and June's days are longer on average than any other month. As for whether it also includes more cloudy days, that would vary by location. The hottest month in most locations is July. In the Southern Hemisphere, the corresponding month is December, the month with the longest average day length. The hottest month is usually January.

Is spring the first season in the year?

Usually it is spring, summer, autumn, winter. However, that is the case in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, it would be autumn. Another way of looking at it is that it is winter when the year starts in the northern hemisphere and spring is the first season entirely in the year in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, it is summer when the year starts and autumn is the first season entirely in the year.
