merchants because their culture believes they contribute nothing to society. all they do is buy goods from people who make or grow them, and sell them for a higher price to make a profit. so in chinese culture merchants were considered the lowest of the low because they did nothing extremely significant, though on the other hand, you could say they brought goods to places the may have never seen then otherwise because of how far away some countries are from China, but as far as within the kingdom, merchants were the lowest
