There was no such thing as an eastern Roman Empire and a western Roman empire. It was a Roman empire. Period. Historians are the only ones who denote eastern and western, but they do this for clarity when speaking about certain sections or aspects of ancient Rome. Now, as for comparison between the eastern and western sections of the empire, the eastcrn section was wealthier than the western and consequently lasted longer than the western section and the eastern section was more heavily influenced by the Greek culture than the western part.
The western part of the Roman Empire fell under the strain of the invasions of by the Germanic people. The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasion and therefore continued to exist. Note that Byzantine Empire is a term which has been coined by historians to indicate the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part. The people in question did not know this term and called their empire Roman Empire.

They were both conquered by Barbarians. But the Barbarians completely conquered the western side while they conquered a little bit of the eastern side. The eastern side lasted longer than the western side. They both are parts of ancient Rome.
The Eastern Roman Empire had two man advantages. Its provinces were generally wealthier and more politically stable that those in the Western Roman Empire. Also, geography was on its side. The main threats from about 400 AD through the Dark Ages came from Germanic tribes who had easy access to the heart of the Western Empire but poor access to the Eastern Empire.
