I read a long time ago that when George Lucas submitted the idea for Star Wars to Fox, they were not interested in the rights to the merchandise so gave them to Lucas (hence any Star Wars stuff is always branded Lucas Arts or some such). Film merchandise was not really a big thing in the 70s so it was one of the first major films to cash in.

From the success of the Star Wars films Lucas went on to create Industrial Light & Magic which created effects for many other films.

I understand that Lucas made more from merchandise than the films made for Fox. Shame he got greedy and made Phantom Manace, but that's a whole new story...
