The type of map projection used by pilots is called a Polar Projection. It shows the Earth from one of the two poles, which helps show what is known as The Great Circle Route. This states that if you live on a rounded object such as the Earth, you travel on a curved line. This makes a Polar Projection the best choice and most commonly used map projection used by pilots.
There are many different types of maps and publications used in aviation. Each serve a different puropse. A few of the more commonly used ones include:
World Aeronautical Chart (WAC)- This shows a large portion of land which we use to track paths/features. When flying VFR (not using instruments to navigate) it is one of the main charts we use for navigating over distance.
Visual Terminal Chart (VTC)- These maps cover alot smaller area of land and is usually only around major towns/cities. What these show are common passages and airspaces that surround airfields.
Enroute Charts (ERC)- These show the major/common paths (airways) taken when navigating long distances. This is used at the same time as the WAC but you can easirly use only one of the 2 maps.
Navigation at sea is different from navigating on land. For example, distances are measured in nautical miles. One nautical mile is equal to 1' of latitude. This and other differences require the use of nautical maps along with special nautical charts.
The type of map used by sailors is known as a chart. A pilot would use an aerial map or chart.
