An HTML file is for web browsers only. It is not a media file at all. But you can have HTML files load media and have them play it in your browser.

You need to change your Windows Defaults. This option is found in the Control Panel. You can choose which program to open files with by default. It sounds to me like all your files have a Windows Media Player Default setting on.

Try using a different program to play your music files. I'd personally recommend winamp (winamp.com). It's free and plays all types of media files.

The JVC Kameleon works great will all sorts of media files. Although it doesn't play OGG or FLAC files, it will happily play almost anything else.
