After the defeat of his right flank at Five Forks on Apr. 1,1865, Lee decided to evacuate Richmond and Petersburg, hoping to take then his 30,000 men around the Federal left flank to join up with Gen. Joseph Johnston's army, which was falling back in North Carolina. The Confederates were retreating towards Amelia Court House with the final goal of reaching Danville, marching south of the Appomattox River, along the railroad Richmond -- Danville. On Apr.5 they found on their route Gen. Sheridan's forces deployed at Jetersville, intercepting their retreat. Lee changed his plan, assigning as new line of retreat Sailor's Creek -- Burkesville, where he planned to resume the retreat towards Danville. The Confederates bypassed Jetersville concentrating on the Sailor's Creek, an affluent of the Appomattox, where, on Apr. 6, the Union II Corps overwhelmed their rear guard taking 7,000 prisoners , including 6 generals.
