A defibulator administers a charge to the cells of the heart. This cells normally contract in unison making the muscles also contract with normal rythym. When the heart cells fibulate( or contract randomly) the muscles fail to make the heart beat in normal rythym.The heart, more or less, just quivers which stops the normal blood flow. A charge from the defibulator gets them back in rythym by making them contract all at one time. This , hopefully, restores normal rythym. The charge is measued in joules ( one -ampere-second).
