Perhaps the first great global ruler was Alexander of Macedonia (Alexander the great) Then there was the Roman Empire The Holey Roman Empire and perhaps the largest of all, The British Empire. In modern times counties/empires seem to be fragmenting rather than growing.
Alexander's Empire extended to what is now India on the east. After his death, however, his empire got carved up by three of his more ambitious generals. Antigonus became king of Macedonia and took controlof the Greek city-states. Ptolemy seized Egypt. Seleucus took the majority of the old Persian Empire, which became known as the Seleucid kingdom.
About 50 countries were part of the British Empire. The rest of today's modern countries either didn't exist at the time or were in a different Empire. Some were even independent.
