The Annunciation is the title given to the sublime moment when the archangel Gabriel saluted the Blessed Virgin Mary as "Hail, full of grace" and proceeded to tell her God's plan: that she had been chosen to bear God's Son, the messiah, Jesus the Christ (St. Luke 26-38). Mary humbly accepts the Divine Will and it is at that moment that she miraculously conceives Jesus, hence the Nativity of Our Lord falls 9 months after this feast on Dec 25th (Christmas). The Annunciation is one of the most solemn feast days of the Catholic Church, which annually celebrates it on March 25th.
The Annunciation is commemorated three times daily in the recitation of the Angelus, a pious prayer said in the morning, at noon and in the evening by Catholics. It is further commemorated in the prayer "The Hail Mary" which takes its first sentence directly from the archangel Gabriel: "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou amongst women"
The annunciation is when the angel Gabriel came down from heaven and told Mary that she was having a baby.
Luke's Gospel. The angel Gabriel appears to Mary and "announces" to her that she will conceive and bear the Christ Child by the power of The Holy Spirit. This is celebrated by the Church on March 25...9 months before Christmas Day. Interestingly, the name Gabriel (Hebrew: Gavri El) can be interpreted as "My Husband".
The Annunciation is the very first mystery of the Rosary, the first of the Joyful Mysteries, celebrating the Archangel Gabriel announcing to the Blessed Virgin that she would bear the Son of God.
